To incoming freshman,
Welcome to Stetson! For the next few years, you are going to call this wonderful university home and make hundreds of memories - big and small. The big moments will be found all around campus; passing through the gates, running home to your sorority on bid day, and ringing the bell. However, the times that define your experience are found in the small things; hammocking with friends in Palm Court, getting your first A on a test you’ve studied hard for, and experiencing all of what DeLand has to offer for the first time. Although high school may have ended differently than anyone expected, your time here is only just beginning and it will be incredible.
My name is Lois Oxley, I am a senior majoring in Russian, East European, Eurasian Studies and minoring in History. Serving as VP Recruitment for Alpha Chi Omega has been an incredible experience and I can’t wait to greet the new membership class of 2020. Outside of Alpha Chi Omega, I am the president of SPREES club (Stetson’s Program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies) and serve on the Academic Honor Council. Between studying for the LSAT and AXO, I teach and tutor English as a foreign language and volunteer at my local church. Following graduation, I plan on heading to law school and entering the world of international trade law.
The best advice I have to offer is simple: Reach outside your comfort zone. Join a club, get to know the people around campus, volunteer for a cause, and go through sorority recruitment. Maybe I’m biased (okay, I’m definitely biased), but finding my home in Alpha Chi Omega has been an extraordinary experience. From spending a semester in Kyrgyzstan with my sorority big sister Ashley to just hanging out in the chapter room with sisters watching movies, some of my best college memories are those spent with my sisters. Serving on the recruitment team for Alpha Chi Omega has been so rewarding. These women push me to be the best version of myself and to seek the heights in everything we do. My goal is to make every woman feel comfortable when coming into our home during recruitment. The biggest thing to keep in mind during recruitment is to follow your heart, it will lead you to the place you are meant to call home.
Your time at Stetson will fly by; before you know it, you will be walking across the stage receiving your diploma. You’re gonna hear this so much but it’s true. Make sure that every now and then that you stop, look around, and catch your breath. It’ll make these years even more enjoyable and the memories even sweeter.
I can’t wait to meet the new membership class of 2020. See you all in the fall!
